This past weekend I took the dogs and headed up to the southeastern mountains of Virginia for a quiet weekend with my best friend. We had a leisurely weekend reading, watching some TV, and walking our dogs through the woods and letting them run amok. I took some time to reacquaint myself with photographing dogs doing fast things outside (i.e. in poor overcast light). We all had a lot of fun just letting the dogs be wild and enjoying the running.

Not long before sunset we realized it had the potential to be quite spectacular. So we headed off for a nearby overlook that seemed to have good potential. Well, in fact it had NO potential and we could not see the setting sun at all! We were now on a mission and racing against time to find a place that was at least somewhat scenic and allowed us to see the westerly sky and setting sun. Just as we were giving up hope we passed a field with a gravel drive and a view looking straight at the setting sun. With no signs warning trespassers away and no sign of bothering anyone, we pulled in, enjoyed the view, and got some nice photos! It ended up being a spectacular sunset and though in hindsight I would have set up the shots a little differently, it was excellent practice and a good lesson in working with what you have.
